2010 Airshows
Supermarine Spitfire Biggin Hill in Kent is a very famous fighter station and on November 2nd, 1939, one of its resident Squadrons claimed the first enemy aircraft of the war when it shot down a Dornier Do 17. Biggin Hill played a major role in the Battle of Britain during World War Two.

The airshow usually has a good mix of historic aircraft and modern military jets. 'Based at Biggin Hill Airport in Kent, Air Displays International established the now world famous Biggin Hill International Air Fair in 1963. Over the years the Air Fair has built a reputation for providing an excitement packed day out for both aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike. In addition to featuring air show favourites such as the Red Arrows the organisers strive to bring something new to each year's show.'

70th Anniversary Air Fair 2010
Biggin Hill 70th Anniversary Air Fair 2010

The Battle of Britain was the defining single event in the 20th century, the summer months of 1940 changed both the course of World War II and of world history. From the middle of August 1940 Biggin Hill suffered daily bombing attacks causing great damage and loss of life. Yet through this terrible period, the station’s men and women kept the airfield operational.

Biggin Hill remains synonymous with the Battle of Britain as the most famous of all of the RAF fighter stations. 70 years on we are commemorating those young men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice with an air fair dedicated to the few that fought in the sky’s over London and Kent and the many that supported them on the ground.

On the weekend of the 26th & 27th June 2010, the sound of Merlin engines will be heard en masse as Spitfires and Hurricanes stage a commemorative display to mark the anniversary. Centre stage will however be reserved for the surviving Battle of Britain veterans of the RAF who will be invited to attend.

Colin Hitchins, organiser said “The Battle of Britain is as important in our history as the Armada and the Battle of Trafalgar, fought in full view of the people; it still holds a special place in the memories of those that lived through the summer of 1940. It is fitting that a special commemoration be held at Biggin Hill during next year’s air fair”
