The Biele Albatrosy display team were formed in 1991 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia flying six Aero L-39C
Albatros aircraft. In 1993 the country was divided into the Czech and Slovak republics with Kosice and
the display team being in Slovakia where they remain.
For the first four years they flew with six aircraft
but in 1995 a seventh was added for solo aerobatics and to keep the crowds attention while the main
group was at a distance. In 1996, owing to the age of their aircraft, the aircraft developed more breakdowns
which necesitated repairs resulting in only six aircraft. On the 17th June, 1996, number 2 and number 6
collided in mid-air due to turbulence but both pilots managed to eject to safety. Further training and displays
had to take place with only three or four aircraft. 1997 saw the return of seven aircraft and they displayed at
various shows including Bratislava (SIAD 97) where they won a prize for best display.
The last L-39 Albatros left Kosice Air Base on April 15th 2004 and this is considered to be the date that the Biele Albatrosy
Display Team came to an end. Hopefully this team can be reformed in the future.
