Lightning "First Flight 50th Anniversary" QRA Day

The Lightning "First Flight 50th Anniversary" QRA Day will take place at Bruntingthorpe Airfield, Leicestershire on Sunday 11th July 2004. The first Lightning flight was on the 4th Aug 1954.

The Bruntingthorpe Lightning Preservation Group is a group of enthusiasts based at Bruntingthorpe airfield Nr Leicester. They are dedicated to maintaining two of the last few remaining English Electric (BAC) LIGHTNING aircraft in a fully airworthy condition. The Group are also currently in the process of raising funds to re-erect the RAF Wattisham QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) Sheds as a permanent hangar for the two aircraft which will also serve as a museum. £50,000 is needed to accomplish this aim.

Regular Open Days are held throughout the summer during which both LIGHTNING F MK 6 aircraft perform runs down the 3000 metre long runway at speeds just short of liftoff, with their two Rolls Royce AVON MK 302 engines operating at full reheat. The Group needs YOUR support NOW in order to keep these historic aircraft serviceable and available for the public to enjoy.

If you have the time, then please attend one of the Open Days. If you wish to make a donation then £50 will have your name permanently displayed on the QRA sheds alongside the likes of Wg Cdr "Bee" Beamont CBE, DSO*, DFC*, DL, FRAeS.
