RAF Valley Charity Photocall 2003

There will be a Charity Photocall at RAF Valley on 15th August 2003. The Society have already invited the USAFE & Italians who accepted last year and in addition have invited the Belgians, French, Germans, and Greeks.

The event will be strictly limited to 500 places, cost not known as yet. More details will be come available after the next planning meeting on the first week of February. Tickets will only be available from the Society and not RAF Valley [to minimise disruption to Admin personnel].

There will not be an airshow at RAF Valley this year despite the rumours.

RAF Valley Charity Photocall 2003 Latest (6/4/03)

The photocall will run from 8am. to 4pm, Flying will commence @ 9am and the VAS ramp will become active with regular fly-bys on runway 19 with forward position to view/photograph.

The tickets are limited to 500 and are £12 each to non-mebers of the Society, available from me with cheque made out to V.A.S. send medium sized SAE with names and car details to:-

Dick Thomas, Monafon, Griffiths Crossing, CAERNARFON. Gwynedd, LL55 1TS

Please note tickets will not be sent out until end of June to allow time for security checks etc.

170 tickets have gone so far (as of 6/4/03), all those unsuccesful applications will be returned with one working week, so no news is good news if you apply before June.

Confirmed to date are E-3D Sentry - several touch and go's followed by a C-130J. Those booked to overshoot/land and taxi in so far are - 2 Jaguars from 6 Sqn & 1 from 41 Sqn, a 2 Sqn Tornado, 28 Sqn Merlin, Chinook. Dutch B412 SAR. Domine & Jetstream. Tucano from the two new Sqns. F-15's for overshoots during the day and at least two to land for refuel.

There are indications that several other front line types will attend when the situation in Iraq has sorted itself out, we have asked in that case for those with mission markings or nose art to be sent, so we are keeping fingers crossed.

The Germans, Dutch, Belgians and Italians have agreed to send aircraft and they will notify us in due course of what is coming. They will probably arrive Wednesday or Thursday and depart on the Monday the same as last year.

We also have the two seat Spitfire from just down the road and a couple of ex-military aircraft from the Liverpool/Hawarden area as well. 19, 208 & 60[R] Sqn aircraft will also be on static, with active Helicopters making the odd flypast as well.

Thats how we stand at the moment, the event is likely to go ahead as in the main we are relying on OEU pilots and aircraft on the Squadrons, together with NATO non-combatants. Our Society members will run the car parking and stewarding just relying on the RAF Police to assist where necessary, thus very little drain on resources at the station.

Details on Message Board.

50th Anniversary of world speed record

Hawker Hunter WV322 will be performing a series of commemorative flypasts on Sunday 7th September to celebrate Neville Duke's capture of the World Air-Speed Record in 1953 in Hunter F3 WB188. The Tangmere Museum is planning an event over the weekend of the 6th and 7th September with WB188 and Gwen and Neville Duke on site over the weekend.

"It is with regret to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, the celebration to commemorate the Capture of the World Air-Speed Record will not feature our Red replica Hunter F. "WB188".

"We still aim to commemorate this historic occasion, and Chris Perkins has stepped in to the breech and offered Hawker Hunter T.B WV322 as a replacement."

"The aircraft will most probably operate from Exeter; fly through Goodwood and then Tangmere, the starting point from which Neville Duke took off from on the 7th September 1953. We aim to do at least one run up and down the original route, but not at Neville's record speed, then return via Tangmere, Goodwood and home to Exeter."

"The Tangmere Museum is planning an event over the weekend of the 6th and 7th September with WB188 and Gwen and Neville Duke on site over the weekend. Also Goodwood has its Trials weekend over the 6th and 7th so a good view of the flypasts should be possible in either location."

"The Plan is now coming together, subject to weather and aircraft serviceability. As stated in the last HFC press release, WV322 will be performing a series of commemorative flypasts on Sunday 7th September to celebrate Neville Duke's capture of the World Air-Speed Record in 1953 in Hunter F3 WB188. The team is working on a paint scheme for this one off flight."

"WV322 will be operating from Exeter and will route via Bournemouth, Southampton, to Goodwood (flypast) Tangmere (flypast) arriving at 12.30 pm, the aircraft will then fly part of the route that Neville flew in 1953. This will see WV322 flying along the south coast between Bognor Regis and Worthing Piers, then turn back to fly along the coast ending with a return flypast at Tangmere and Goodwood. The aircraft will then return to base at Exeter. Tangmere Museum is planning a weekend event to cover this celebration, that will be open to the public, and we are assured the man, Neville Duke will be there on the Sunday. Pilot for the day will be John Hurrell."

"Our thanks go to Pauline Senior (Goodwood Circuit), Alan Bower (Tangmere Museum), Squadron Leader Dave Grove (AUS), Dave Evans (CAA), Alice Talbot and Andrew Richardson (AKZO NOBEL), Richard Dereham, Gwen and Neville Duke. Anyone else we have forgotten our apologies!"
