North Weald 2000 on May 14th has been cancelled
Cranfield, Beds Classic Jet Show on August 13th has been cancelled
Even though the start of the season is several months away there are already two casualties this year. The North Weald Air Display, which is organised by Intrepid Aviation, had been cancelled due to Epping Forest council increasing its charges for airfield services. The budget to stage an airshow is very tight and profits are small so a hike in costs makes the event financially unviable. Not only that but Intrepid are concentrating their efforts on keeping the airfield open. The same council are after developing the site for housing and a hotel.
The Classic Jets show at Cranfield has been cancelled for the second year in a row. The death of Mark Hanna, one of the organisers is one of the reasons. More and more airshows are falling by the wayside with money being the root cause.
Go to LISTING for more info.
The St Mawgan Airshow in Cornwall has been cancelled this year and there are no plans to hold an airshow here in the future. The reason for its cancellation is the escalating cost of health and safety precautions.
The 'Festival of the Air' airshow at White Waltham, Berks. which was to go ahead on the 8th July 2000 has now been postponed/cancelled. The following info is from the official website at http://www.wlac.co.uk/:
'I wrote to members late last year to confirm that we were seeking corporate sponsorship in order to stage a one day airshow on the 8th July this year.'
'After a great deal of hard work, planning and negotiating, we have unfortunately been unable to secure sufficient funding necessary to put on a show that would be worthy of the West London Aero Club. We have therefore taken the decision that rather than trying to stage an event that would fall short of the high standards that have been set from our previous airshows, it would be better to postpone this year's event. This will give us the opportunity to either continue working towards an event later in the year or indeed make the airshow a biannual event giving us a full twelve months within which to make the airshow in 2001 a spectacular event.'
There will not be an airshow at Duxford,Cambs. in May 2000. Below is a list of Duxford 2000 airshows:
Flying Legends Airshow - July 8th-9th 2000
Battle of Britain Anniversary Airshow - September 9th-10th 2000

Southampton Water, Hants. is to hold the Sea Wings 2000 Airshow on Sunday 4th June.
Participating in the show will be two Russian amphibious aircraft, the Beriev Be-12 and Be-200. They are to be sent to Southampton as part of a sales drive in Western Europe. The Beriev Be-12 has never been seen before outside of the former soviet bloc. Both the aircraft are fire-bombers, so some spectacular water drops can be expected during the show. (WITHDRAWN see below)
Also displaying at Southampton Water will be a Piaggio Royal Gull, and Grumman Albatross from America. A Grumman Goose is flying down from Scotland, and a Bombardier Canadair CL-415, Twin Bee, Lake Renegade, and DH Canada Beaver equipped with floats are expected from Europe.
They are also planning to break the post-RAF Spitfire formation record during the airshow and have a formation of over 16 Spitfires in the air. Other participating aircraft include the Red Arrows, Harrier GR7, Jaguar GR3, Tornado F3, Nimrod MR2, Lynx HAS3, Sea King HAS6, Swordfish, Sea Fury, and 3 Canberras flying together.
'SeaWings 2000 will be the largest FREE airshow in the United Kingdom in the year 2000'
The following notice appears on the Seawings website:
'It is with regret that we announce the withdrawal of the Beriev aircraft from the display. We have been in negotiation with Beriev for over two years but have just been informed by the company that these two aircraft have failed to achieve the necessary certification to operate outside Russia. We apologise for any disappointment, but hope that you will still enjoy the other rare and exciting seaplanes that will be appearing at SeaWings 2000.'
The next full open day this year is on Sunday 3rd September, but if really loud noise is your thing, then the Lightning Preservation Group's QRA day on Sunday 9th July will fit the bill! As planning permission for erecting the ex-RAF Wattisham Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) hangars has been granted, now all the LPG need is money. The QRA Day, then, is to raise funds for the erection of the hangars and keep the LPG's two Lightnings out of the rain. Both Lightnings will taxi and a wide range of souvenirs will be available. Donations of £50 or more to the hangar appeal will be recorded on a roll of honour within the completed hangars. The LPG are hoping for loads of Lightning-related Squadron associations, ex-Lightning personnel and enthusiasts to turn up - so don't disappoint them! There will also be a sponsored Lightning pull, so you may get to see LPG personnel hospitalised. Gates open 10:30. For any further details on this particular event, phone (01243) 827266 or (01234) 378827.
